What is a Chartered Surveyor and Why Should You Choose One?

Hello and welcome to the brand new RB Surveyors blog! We’re so glad that you’ve chosen to come to our page and find out a little bit more about what we do!

However, before we get into our very first blog post, we thought we’d introduce ourselves for those who don’t know who we are. We’re RB Surveyors, a team of talented, independent chartered surveyors based in London, Birmingham and Chester. We’re available to offer valuable, reliable surveys for commercial properties all across the UK, providing you with professional advice regarding the property market and other property related news.

So, what exactly is a chartered surveyor and why should you opt for one?

Are You Just a Surveyor?

One question that we are asked regularly is “are you simply a surveyor?” and the straightforward, simple answer to that is “no”.

Building Surveyors
In theory, anyone can call themselves a surveyor here in the UK; there are no rules or regulations surrounding the title. This means that there are people who call themselves surveyors who have very little in the way of knowledge about the property industry, making them quite a dangerous choice, especially when choosing to invest in a property which has been surveyed by them

So, What is a Chartered Surveyor?

As chartered surveyors, it is our job to provide the most reliable, accurate surveys on a variety of properties and various different conditions.

In order to do this, we all need training up to a specific standard, which means following a set of rules which are put into place by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). We are then regulated by RICS to ensure that we are constantly abiding by these rules.

Because we are constantly regulated, we have to ensure that we’re being the best possible ambassadors for our profession!

Why Choose a Chartered Surveyor?

It’s hopefully already obvious why you should choose a chartered surveyor over a standard surveyor following our comparison above, but just in case you need more reasons to pick a chartered surveyor, we’d be happy to oblige.

As we’re regulated by a professional body, we are always expected to work at a set standard, meaning that we will have received the adequate training and guidance to get to a position where we are able to confidently and accurately produce survey reports on any kind of building.

This gives you peace of mind that all the work that we carry out is undertaken in accordance with the UK’s guidelines, increasing the integrity and the trust of our profession.

It also means that, should you be unhappy with your survey process and you’re working with a chartered surveyor, you will also be protected by the RICS Complaints Handling Procedure – something that standard surveyors can’t promise or offer.

We hope that you’ll continue to check back on our blog to see what we are getting up to, and read about some of the most important changes that go on within the chartered surveying world. If you require our help or would like further information on the services that we provide, feel free to get in touch with us today – we’ll be more than happy to help!
